Coach Bill Hawkins

Coach Bill Hawkins has been the Mayfield High School Head Wrestling Coach since 2018, after being the Assistant Varsity Coach since 2000, He wrestled for six years beginning in Junior High and culminating as a member of the 1979 State Championship Team at Mayfield under head coach Lloyd Von Wolff. After graduating in 1980 (from Mayfield) Coach Hawkins began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Alameda Junior High for three years, and entered the high school coaching ranks as a volunteer on the Mayfield Staff in 1999.  His career highlights include the team New Mexico State Second Place Finish in 2012, as an assistant to head coach Jimmy Nevarez, as well as the many state placers that Mayfield has produced over his career.

In 2006, Coach Hawkins retired from active duty with the New Mexico Army National Guard as a Master Sergeant after serving for twenty five years.  He immediately began substitute teaching with Las Cruces Public Schools, and was the head football coach at Vista Middle School from 2009 to 2014.  He earned a BA in Anthropology from New Mexico State University in 1995, and a MA in Southwest Archeology from NMSU in 1998.

Coach Hawkins is married with four adult children, and thirteen grandchildren, and continues to reside in Las Cruces, where he was born and raised.  His favorite saying in wrestling and life: “You cannot lose until you quit.”
