LCPS Families,

Due to inclement weather in the area, Las Cruces Public Schools implemented its lightning safety protocol this afternoon, which required students and staff to shelter in place until conditions were safe. (A copy of the lightning protocol in Spanish is linked here.)

All elementary students have now been dismissed for the day. As a result of the weather delay, middle and high school bus transportation will be delayed this afternoon.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we prioritize the safety of our students and staff.

For generations, Mayfield vs. Las Cruces has been one of the most historic and well-known high school football rivalries in New Mexico.

Some of you remember the glory years, the packed stands, the electricity in Aggie Memorial Stadium, and what this rivalry meant to an entire community. Others are watching your kids carry that tradition forward today at the Field of Dreams.

But here’s the thing, the next generation deserves that same support.

Let’s bring the energy back.
Let’s fill the stands.
Let’s remind everyone why Mayfield vs. Las Cruces has always meant something special.

Reminder: LCPS Food Distribution — Thursday, Sept. 3

Las Cruces Public Schools, in partnership with Roadrunner Food Bank, will host a food distribution on Thursday, Sept. 3, beginning at 9:00 a.m. and continuing until supplies last.

• Location: LCPS Family Support Center, 505 S. Main St., Suite 249, Las Cruces, NM
• Food will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis to the first 75 families.
• The line often forms early, so please plan to arrive ahead of time.
• This is a drive-thru distribution. Families are asked to remain in their vehicles.

Please share this reminder with families who may benefit from this resource.

The Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education will meet today for the work session at 4:00 p.m. in the boardroom of the Dr. Karen M. Trujillo Complex. We welcome the public to attend!

The Board will discuss:

• Policy: A second reading of Policy BG regarding policy adoption, revision and review.

• Legislative priorities: Proposed NMSBA 2027 legislative resolutions focused on academic achievement and school climate and safety.

• University partnerships: Proposed agreements with Western Governors University and the University of the Southwest.

• Capital projects: A capital outlay grant agreement and the closeout of the Desert Hills Elementary School project.

• Board appointment: Appointment of a Board member to the DACC Advisory Board.

• Early childhood: The annual report on Early Childhood Programs.

• 6–12 Academies: An update on the district’s 6–12 Academy.

• Connection Center: An update on the LCPS Connection Center, with a focus on academic achievement and school climate and safety.

Shelter-in-Place Notification

Due to lightning detected within 10 miles of campus, middle and high schools have implemented a shelter-in-place to protect students, staff, and visitors. Students are safe and remaining indoors while we monitor weather conditions.

As a result, some school buses may experience delays in departing campus and getting students home. Bus drivers and school staff are working to transport students home as safely as possible once conditions allow.

We appreciate your patience and understanding. We will provide additional information as conditions change.

What to Expect:
• Students and staff will remain safely indoors until weather conditions improve.
• Parents and guardians may still pick up their child during a shelter-in-place. A valid driver's license or government issued photo ID is required for student release.
• Students who normally walk, bike, or ride the bus home will remain at school until it is safe to travel.
• Buses and student drivers will be allowed to leave once school administrators determine conditions are safe.
• Stay informed with live weather updates and lightning countdowns via the Weather tab on your child's school website.
The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we follow established safety procedures during hazardous weather.


Notificación de Refugio en el Lugar

Debido a rayos detectados dentro de 10 millas del campus, nuestra escuela ha implementado un refugio en el lugar para proteger a los estudiantes, al personal y a los visitantes. Los estudiantes están seguros y permanecen en el interior mientras monitoreamos las condiciones meteorológicas.

Como resultado, algunos autobuses escolares pueden experimentar retrasos al salir del plantel y al llevar a los estudiantes a casa.
