The Las Cruces Public Schools Board of Education will begin accepting applications from candidates interested in an appointment in District 1, a position on the board vacated by Ray Jaramillo. The deadline for candidates to submit all required documentation is April 12, 2023. During a special meeting of the Board of Education on Monday, board members approved a process by which the vacancy will be filled, detailed in a letter to the community. As part of the 2023 Las Cruces Space Festival, our center is offering free space simulation missions to the public. Bring the family, friends, co-workers, or just yourself for a trip to the Moon or Mars. The missions are open to anyone ages 8 and above. Space is limited and these offerings usually fill quickly. New Immunization Requirements for 11th Grade Entry To attend school in New Mexico, all children unless legally exempted, must meet immunization requirements as set forth by state regulations. The Department of Health School Entry Immunizations Requirements now state that 2 Meningococcal vaccines are required for 11th grade entry for the 2023-24 school year. Students will not be allowed to attend for the new school year 2023/24 until this requirement is met. Please give this matter your immediate attention so that your child’s health may be protected, and their education may continue.  If you have questions regarding immunizations, please contact your school nurse. Congratulations to Valeria Garcia-Aguirre, the LCPS student athlete of the week from Mayfield High School. Valeria holds a season record of 33-2. She is the 2023 NMAA State Champion at 126 pounds. She placed first in the Bowie Invitational, and first in the Region 2 State Qualifier. Her coach says Valeria is a great role model for all of her teammates and fellow students. She is always extremely upbeat, motivated, and unselfishly helps those around her to improve their performance and achieve their goals. The ultimate leader and teammate.

Congratulations to Diego Guerra, the LCPS student athlete of the week from Mayfield High School. Diego is the team captain in wrestling; he holds a season record of 25-16. He placed second at the Region 2 State Qualifier and third at the Bowie Invitational. His coach says he is a very motivated and dedicated individual, who has demonstrated an innate ability to set and achieve very ambitious goals.

New Mexico State University's Physics Graduate Student Organization (PGSO) will host their annual Physics Fun Day on March 24, Friday from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at Gardiner Hall, NMSU. This popular event, which has been taking place since 2009 obviously last couple of years has been difficult to organize because of COVID-19, is designed to introduce the public to the exciting world of physics. With hands-on demonstrations and some poster presentations, participants will get a glimpse into the cool physics demos. The experiment will be set-up outdoor and indoor of Gardiner Hall. PGSO's commitment to diversity and inclusion within STEM fields is evident through the event's aim to attract a diversified audience, including high school students, college students, and members of the NMSU community. The experiments will be presented in multiple languages, including Spanish, to ensure that everyone can participate and engage with the demonstrations. The goal of the event is not only to generate excitement for physics but to showcase the kind of work and research that takes place at NMSU's Physics department. The demonstrations will cover basic physics concepts such as conservation of energy and angular momentum, as well as more advanced topics like optics and space-time curvature. Additionally, attendees will get to see and taste ice cream made with liquid nitrogen. President of PGSO, Krishna Acharya said that Physics Fun Day is not just about fun; it's about inspiring the next generation of scientists and showcasing the importance of physics dissemination. PGSO believes that diversifying the field of physics is crucial for the advancement of science and society as a whole.
